This is one of two interlocking pairs of terms (Natural/Cultural being the other one) related to reduced listening and to the Quatre Écoutes in Schaefferian theory.

- Ordinary listening goes immediately to the causality of the sound, its origins, as well as its meaning (écouter and comprendre in the quatre écoutes) but which does not reflect on itself very much (ouïr or entendre) or how it functions.

- Practical listening concentrates on a particular manner of listening. Take, for example, the sound of galloping. Ordinary listening hears it as the galloping of horses, but the practical listenings can lead to different outcomes: the acoustician seeks to determine the nature of the physical signal, the Red Indian hears "possible danger of an approaching enemy", and the musician hears rhythmic groupings. 229	ZhaoBai	Un des deux couples d’écoutes avec le couple naturelle/culturelle en relation avec l’écoute réduite et les quatre écoutes de la théorie schaefferienne. - L’écoute banale est celle qui va d’emblée à la causalité du son, à sa provenance, ainsi qu’à sa signification (secteurs 1 et 4 des quatre écoutes, écouter et comprendre) mais qui s’interroge peu sur elle-même (secteur 2 et 3 des quatre écoutes, ouïr et entendre) et sur son fonctionnement. - L’écoute praticienne est celle qui se spécialise dans une direction d’écoute spécifique. Soit un bruit de galop : l’écoute banale l’entend comme un galop de cheval, mais les différentes écoutes praticiennes d’entendre différemment ; l’acousticien cherche à déterminer la nature du signal physique, le Peau-Rouge y entend le « danger possible d’une approche hostile », et le musicien y entend des groupes rythmiques.
