Explore new ways of thinking about sounds and new approaches to composing with them.

Transformation
The transformation and development of materials is a simple but highly powerful tool, used in many different types of music.

Structure
The question of how to structure materials can be difficult. We will examine a number of possible strategies and encourage you to develop your own.

Space
When working with recorded sound, Space becomes a powerful element within compositions. Both the positioning of sound, and the impression of space can be really important.

Silence
Sounds are defined by the silence that surrounds them. And in this way silence itself becomes a key element in composition.

Electroacoustic Piece
Compose a piece that explores the gestures and timbres of sounds.

Panning and Multiple Loudspeakers
Sounds in the real world often move. But if we capture those sounds using a stationary microphone, and play them back using a stationary loudspeaker then the sound no longer moves (it comes from a fixed and stationary point – the still loudspeaker). Sounds also come from all around us. By using multiple loudspeakers we can reintroduce the impression of positioning and movement for sounds.

Complex Soundwaves
Most objects vibrate in a more complex way than a simple back and forth motion. The more complex the vibrations the more complex the resulting sound waves.

Modes of Listening
Learn to listen in different ways. Either to the properties of the sound itself (musical listening) or to the source of the sound (contextual listening).

Recognisibility
Some sounds we can recognise, others we can't. What does this mean for music that is made with sounds?

Timbre / Sound Quality
How can you describe the texture of sounds?

Chance
Chance and randomness can be a really good way to find new sounds and generate new ideas. But some composers decided to go even further and hand over most of the compositional decisions to chance.

Electroacoustic Music
Electroacoustic music emerged from the mixing and combination of techniques from Musique Concrete and Elektronische Musik.

Music and Maths
For thousands of years people have tried to use Maths to describe and understand music.
