Octophony is a term used by some to designate an eight-channel spatialisation of sound. It generally implies a preconceived plan of spatial relationships which are fixed on a recording medium and played back in performance over a system in which the eight channels are routed to eight loudspeakers on a fixed one-to-one basis.
EARS 2:
Eight (octo) Sounds (Phony), the use of eight loudspeakers to playback audio. In most octophonic systems each loudspeaker will receive a unique audio signal.
