EARS:

An important signal-processing technique used (often in conjunction with expansion) in studio recording equipment such as mixing desks and noise reduction systems. A compressor scales the dynamic range of a sound signal so that both the quietest and the loudest sounds can be recorded or otherwise treated without either losing the quiet sounds under the system noise, or causing distortion through excessive signal levels overloading recorders or other equipment. It acts by progressively reducing the level of the loud sounds to below some preset threshold, which depends on the dynamic range of the recording medium, or on the particular special effect required. A compressor scales (verb.) the dynamic range of a sound signal

so that both the quietest and the loudest sounds can be recorded

(in other words, treated with NEITHER 'losing the quiet sounds' NOR 'causing distortion').

or otherwise treated without EITHER 'losing the quiet sounds' OR 'causing distortion.
