Explore the inner workings of sound.
How do sounds work? Where do they come from? How are we able to hear them? What happens when you record a sound? and more.
Modulation
When sounds are added together they can create new textures. But we can also use one sound to control the properties of another creating patterns or rhythms.
Additive (+) and Subtractive (-) Synthesis
Sounds can be added together or subtracted from one another. Learn how new sounds can be made in this way.
Phase
Soundwaves can add together and subtract from one another (cancelling each other out). This property of sounds can be unwanted but can also be used creatively.
Panning and Multiple Loudspeakers
Sounds in the real world often move. But if we capture those sounds using a stationary microphone, and play them back using a stationary loudspeaker then the sound no longer moves (it comes from a fixed and stationary point – the still loudspeaker). Sounds also come from all around us By using multiple loudspeakers we can reintroduce the impression of positioning and movement for sounds.
Complex Soundwaves
Most objects vibrate in a more complex way than a simple back and forth motion. The more complex the vibrations the more complex the resulting sound waves.
Capturing and Reproducing Sounds
Learn the way in which sounds function, and how they travel from the sounding object (via vibrations in air) to our ears.
Generating Sounds
Using electrical technology it is possible for us to synthesise new sounds.
