In Schaeffer's description of his solfège, the first stage of the programme of musical research, typology is a procedure to identify and classify sound objects, which should be able to encompass the whole range of possible sounds. Identification is a procedure which consists in isolating, cutting out sound objects from every possible sound context; classification is a procedure which consists of arranging them in families, in different types. In his Traité des objets musicaux, he defines about thirty types of objects. (Paraphrase of Michel Chion (1983). Guide des Objets Sonores. Eds. Buchet/Chastel, Paris. 1995 translation by John Dack/Christine North.)
