This term refers to any mixing or signal processing technique that aims to increase the richness of a sounds spectral content. A sound may be transposed up or down (or both) and mixed with the original, a process which also normally involves careful equalisation. If multiple versions of a sound in different octave registers are mixed together, the term Octave Stacking is sometimes used. The addition of specific isolated areas of spectra to a mix can also be described as Spectral Thickening. The term could be thought of in a manner analagous to the creation, in technical terms (rather than semantic), of 'composite sounds'
