记号语言学是一门研究符号和符号系统的科学。它不同于自然语言，但也是应用于对象的、一种语言学上的分支。对于记号语言中存在的、可以确认的声音来讲，电子音乐特别有助于此方面的研究。

Semiotics is a science of signs and/or sign systems. It is also an application of linguistic methods to objects other than natural language. Electroacoustic music lends itself particularly to semiotic study where there is a presence of identifiable sounds.
