Panning (or pan) is a contraction of the term panoramics, and is an aural analogy of the visual/cinematic sense of the term. It refers to the (width-oriented) placement or movement of sounds within a stereo or multi-channel sound-field. This is conventionally achieved through the use of potentiometers ('pan-pots'), for example on a mixing desk. However, panning can be effected via any number of dedicated hardware or software controllers.
