Information Theory is a theory for the technical transfer of information and was introduced in 1948 by E. Shannon. The search for a precise aesthetic, this is, of an aesthetic measure M using information theoretical measurements involving complexity C and ordering principle O, led to the so-called information aesthetics of Max Bense and Abraham A. Moles. Through their concept artistic processes would be able to be described, valued and synthesised. The ideas of the mathematician and physicist, George D. Birkoff, in particular his theory of aesthetic measurement which he made public from 1928-1932, were of great influence here. Also influential for musical thought were the works of the physicist Wilhelm Fuchs. Today, these theories may be seen of historical value only in terms of music, literature and fine art.
