A typical perceptual experience in which the whole is understood as something more than the sum of the parts. Furthermore, this gestalt may be perceived before the parts comprising it. When figures become complex or when labelling of incomplete visual or auditory stimuli is required, a similar configuration may be interpreted differently by different individuals based on past experience. Since Gestalt psychology is concerned with the perceptual and cognitive organisation of sensory stimuli, it has become of increasing interest to analysts of electroacoustic music.
