Acoustic Communication, a term proposed by Barry Truax, is an interdiscipline concerned with sound (and human experience of it), which strives to transcend problems of concept and terminology associated with approaching research from within the 'agenda' of more clearly defined contributory disciplines, such as 'music'. Acoustic communication includes closely related areas of study such as Acoustic Design, Soundscape Design and Soundscape Studies. Whereas in many considerations of sonic and musical experience the orthodoxy will privilege the discipline of Acoustics as a source of concepts and models, Acoustic Communication privileges the notion of sound as information.
