Normally used as an aide-mémoire for electroacoustic performance, a diffusion score is generally a high level visual representation of a piece, that notates, often in a highly personal fashion those salient aural details necessary for the performer's interpretation. Often hand-drawn and utilising symbols particular to the maker of the score, a common approach is to represent time on a horizontal axis and spectrum in the vertical. Sometimes high level or edited computer-based visualisations are used in diffusion. Diffusion scores are normally not of great assistance to an analyst except as an overall 'map' of a piece's structure.
