A term coined by Jonty Harrison (an antonym of 'organic' structure) which refers to formalist approaches to the structuring and spatialisation of material in the studio, in particular the musical legacy of elektronische Musik and serialism. The term refers to formalised notions of measurement and proportion. This is contrasted with the (perceptually-led) legacy of the musique concrète approach where materials themselves suggest suitable structuring and spatial strategies.
